Across the homes of the Little Sisters of the Poor in India, Grandparents Day becomes a beautiful expression of gratitude. The residents are not only remembered for what they have done in the past. They are celebrated for who they are today: elders with wisdom, humour, faith, resilience, and stories that deserve to be heard.
In the homes of the Little Sisters of the Poor, the celebration honours the dignity of every resident. Some residents may be grandparents by family ties. Others may not have grandchildren of their own. Yet all are treated with the same affection and respect. They are elders, guides, and blessings to the community around them.
In their homes across India, the Little Sisters welcome elderly persons who need support, especially those who are poor, alone, or without regular family care. Their service includes practical help such as meals, medical attention, personal care, and a safe place to live. Yet their mission goes beyond physical needs.
They offer presence.
CARMONA IN GOA
On July 24, 2026, the students of St. Pius School in Orlim delighted our residents in celebration of Grandparents Day. They performed several songs in Konkani for the grandparents, and each student gave a red rose to each of our residents.
SECUNDERABAD IN TELANGANA
World Grandparents Day - On July 26, 2026, at 4 p.m., a particularly delightful event was the "HAT PARADE." While it wasn't a contest, it was filled with joy and fun. The judges, residents, sisters, and a few guests assembled in the hall. Our participants truly stood out, showcasing incredible creativity, color, and imagination.
Thirty residents from both the Men's and Ladies' sections took part, showcasing their inventive hats made of straw, paper, flowers, and toy animals. Some even danced before the judges as Mr. D'Souza played lively music on his saxophone.
The judges were busy tallying their scores, and the final announcement was made.
The first prize went to Mrs. Marie Amma, the second prize to Mr. Hari Krishna, and the third prize to Anthumani. Our winners were ecstatic, and the hall erupted with thunderous applause. We were fortunate to have our Mother Provincial with us, and the winners beamed with joy and gratitude as she presented the awards. The day concluded with a joyful evening.
BANGALORE PERPETUAL SECOURS
On 26th July, our Home in Bangalore Perpetual Secours, joyfully celebrated the World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly with a lively afternoon that brought generations together. The celebration had a twofold purpose: to honour our dear Residents and to introduce young people to the mission of our Home.
Invitations were sent to the youth groups of three parishes through what’s App, with the parish priests also informed. To our delight, about 30/35 enthusiastic young people arrived at 3:00 p.m., bringing guitars, drums, games, and, above all, joyful hearts ready to share their time with our Residents.
The programme began with a prayer song, followed by lively singing, dancing, and interactive games. One of the game was a Bible-themed word game, where mixed teams of youth and residents worked together to identify Biblical characters and form their names using alphabet cards, created moments of excitement and laughter. It was truly inspiring to see the residents eagerly searching for answers and enthusiastically participating. The fun continued with more games until nearly 6:00 p.m., and no one wanted the afternoon to end.
One of the most exciting moments came when the young people were challenged to get the names of the Residents and remember as many as possible. Within no time, some could recall more than 30 names out of the 40 Residents present. This simple activity fostered genuine encounters, making our Elderly feel known, valued, and loved.
The atmosphere was that of one family filled with laughter, friendship, and heartfelt care. As evening approached, the youth even helped arrange the dining tables before the residents' dinner.
Before leaving, the young people expressed their sincere gratitude for the invitation and shared how deeply they had been touched by the experience and inspired by the mission of our Home. Their words filled our hearts with joy and made every effort worthwhile. It was a memorable celebration that beautifully reflected the gift of intergenerational friendship, leaving lasting smiles in every heart!
We also had invited Serra Club of Bangalore to join us in praying for vocations. This is a Catholic lay organization that fosters and promotes religious vocations to the priesthood and consecrated life. Around 10/12 members join us in an hour of prayer with spontaneous intercession and Rosary offered for this intention. It was remarkable the way they made the intercession praying not only for the youth but also their parents and the families that they may encourage and support the young to answer God’s call. May the Lord bless our efforts and heed our prayers and grant courage to the young to answer His call.
BANGALORE SAINT JOSEPH
On 25 July 2026, the Little Sisters of the Poor in Bangalore marked Grandparents Day with a warm gathering that honoured the elderly residents with affection, dignity, and gratitude. The morning Eucharist was offerd to their intentions and their families. During breakfast, gifts were given to each Resident.
Ms. Aradhana, a friend of the home, and who is one of the directors of a company called ‘Macadem Management Services’, generously offered to provide an exquisite vegetarian lunch for our elderly Residents. Tables were arranged on the verandas in front of the laundry, allowing the residents to enjoy their festive meal there. The Little Sisters and volunteers served the lunch to the Residents.
One of the memorable features of the day was the shopping arrangement at 4 pm, where various items such as sarees for ladies, pants and shirts for men, and toiletries.
The Residents received a coupon and a bag to shop for different items using their coupons. This simple activity carried special meaning. Shopping allows a person to choose. It offers a sense of independence, personal preference, and delight. It was an activity that everyone enjoyed.
As the day ended, we felt grateful to God and everyone who helped provide our elderly Residents with such a delightful experience. Praise be to God!
