For the past 125 years the Little Sisters of the Poor had been taking care of the elderly poor, abandoned and destitute with love and dedication in Bangalore St Joseph, India.
God's loving providence sustained them during these years, through the generosity and kindness of the benefactors and friends of the Little Sisters of the Poor. May God bless each and every one of them in the way he knows best.
January 4, 2025, was a memorable day for the Little Sisters of the Poor in Bangalore as they commemorated three significant events this year. This year signifies the 125th anniversary of the establishment of the Little Sisters of the Poor in Bangalore, known as Bangalore St Joseph, which is the second foundation of the Little Sisters of the Poor in India.
To honor this occasion, a Holy Eucharist was conducted by two Auxiliary Bishops of our Archdiocese, Most Rev. Arokiaraj Satis Kumar and Most Rev. Joseph Susainathan, accompanied by our priest friends who concelebrated. Mother Catherine Mary Immaculate delivered the introductory note, highlighting how this celebration encompasses three events – The Jubilee Year of the Church, declared by Pope Francis, the 125th anniversary of the foundation of the Little Sisters of the Poor in Bangalore, and the 100th year of the blessing of our chapel. Our archbishop Rt Rev. Peter Machado graciously announced that our Home for the Aged is one of the pilgrimage sites for the people of the Bangalore diocese to obtain the plenary indulgence during the Jubilee year of 2025, which brings great joy to all of us.
The gospel reading was selected from St Matthew 25:35-40: “When I was hungry you gave me to eat, when I was thirsty you gave me to drink…” Bishop Joseph Susainathan, who delivered the homily, highlighted the apostolate of the Little Sisters in serving the elderly poor, appreciated, and thanked the Little Sisters for their devoted service to the aged. At the conclusion of the Eucharist, Mother Provincial Mary Clara expressed gratitude to the dignitaries, the priests, and all those who contributed to making this celebration a joyous one.
After Mass, everyone gathered in the large dining room of the residents, with bishops and priests in honored positions. The Residents presented a handmade flower to each guest, followed by the infirm residents performing an action song, “Every person is a gift of God.” Then the Bishops distributed a packet of biscuits to each of our residents. While the Residents enjoyed their breakfast in their respective dining rooms, the visitors proceeded to the multi-purpose hall where a delightful breakfast awaited them. We thank God for this wonderful celebration and all those who participated in the event.
We thank very specially, the two auxiliary bishops of Bangalore, the chaplains from Franciscan Friary and the priest friends who made it possible to be with us on that day for the celebration. May God be praised and exalted for ever and ever.
